Farming – Kids Style

It was nice to have a sunny warm day today for a change. For the first evening in ages, the kids played outside till late and then came in exhausted, hungry and filthy. It is incredible to think there is such a bad drought in the States and so wet here. ?Lots of farmers have all their stock in and no silage cut which means they are either finishing off last year’s silage or buying some which is going to be expensive. ?It seems that there are pockets that have missed some of the heavy showers but we’ve got plenty of them!

Brian has been bringing in straw, buying it from a guy who has plenty left from last year in an attempt to get some jobs done while the weather is so wet. ?Apart from hurting us in the pocket, the wet weather means many more hours work too between foddering the cattle that are in, buffer feeding the cows (they were also in for 3 nights this week) and cleaning out animals. ?There’s lots of jobs needing to be done that just won’t get done this year too such as drainage works and re-seeding.

K has been helping Brian to milk occasionally this week, she puts on the back part of the cluster (it would be too heavy for her to put on her own). I had to laugh at her the first evening. Brian wears a long apron while milking so in she came to get her cooking/baking apron!

And Will was making silage – kid’s style. I’d cut some of the grass in the garden so he gathered some up to make a little silage field. Long may it last!
